What is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

ADHD is a mental health condition that affects brain and nervous system development and is most often diagnosed in childhood. People with ADHD have a hard time paying attention, sitting still, and controlling impulsive behavior. For children, ADHD may affect learning and socialization.

Researchers are still investigating what causes the development of ADHD, but theorize genetics is a major factor. Children may also be at risk of ADHD if they were born prematurely or with low birth weight. Brain injury and exposure to toxic substances like lead during early developmental years may also increase the risk of ADHD.

In addition to ADHD, Bellevue Psychiatry offers psychological assessments for all learning disabilities.

What are ADHD symptoms?

Most children have trouble paying attention or misbehave. However, in children with ADHD, these behaviors are more difficult to control. Common ADHD symptoms include:

  • Forgetting or losing things
  • Daydreaming
  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Trouble sitting still
  • Talking out of turn
  • Making careless mistakes
  • Taking unnecessary risks
  • Trouble taking turns
  • Difficulty getting along with others

Children with ADHD may exhibit symptoms that are either predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive, or a combination of both.

What is the QbTest?

The QbTest is an interventional psychiatric service offered at Bellevue Psychiatry. The computer-based test provides the Bellevue Psychiatry team with objective and unbiased decision-making support to help diagnose and treat children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD.

The QbTest is the only FDA-cleared device for ADHD testing. It measures the three core signs of ADHD: hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity. Your test results are compared to a group of people of the same sex and age without ADHD.
